WORCESTER boxer Michael Mooney says he is in the best shape yet as he takes his next step towards a major title in the sport.

The 28-year-old faces the fourth bout of his professional career tonight when he takes on debutant Amadur Rahman at the HMV Institute in Birmingham.

It is part of Mooney’s preparations for a shot at the vacant British Masters light-welterweight belt in November against Adam Kettleborough, who he defeated in his last fight.

That was two months ago, since when the Ronkswood boxer has linked up with new coach Paul Fellows and has been sparring with former England international amateur Luke Paddock.

“I am in good shape, probably the best I have ever been in,” he said. “I have done a lot of road running.

“Paul suits my style and knows how to bring the best out of me. Since I have been with him I have been getting better and better.”

The Rahman fight, part of It’s-A-Bout-Boxing’s Fright Night bill, will be recorded and shown on digital channel Showcase (Sky 192, Freeview 400) on Sunday, September 22.

Mooney has previously beaten Ollie Rainbird and lost to Scott Moises since turning professional earlier this year.
