THE past week has been excellent both for Worcestershire and myself on a personal level.

It began with the 38-run victory against Nottinghamshire in the Yorkshire Bank 40 and was followed by a six-wicket success against Bangladesh ‘A’, during which I scored a century.

The win at Trent Bridge was particularly pleasing. That’s a difficult place to go to and Nottinghamshire have a lot of international cricketers so it was a good scalp for us.

We have been pretty inconsistent throughout the year but some of the performances have been outstanding.

We beat Somerset twice as well as Northants in the T20 and they went on to win it last weekend.

There was also the YB40 victory at Hove earlier in the campaign so it’s frustrating that we don’t perform like that on a more consistent basis.

But all credit to the team, it was a fantastic performance against Notts and all three disciplines were good.

It was also a good all-round performance against Bangladesh ‘A’ with lots of contributions from the players and I thought the spinners were outstanding.

Young batsmen Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Tom Fell got their chance and it was exciting to see them do well, as did Alexei Kervezee.

On a personal note, it was nice to get the 100. It’s my first year opening the batting in one-day cricket and to have got two hundreds so far this season is really pleasing.

Playing against an international side is good experience, as we saw with the Australia game earlier in the season.

It was slightly different against Bangladesh but it gave us an opportunity to have a look at the younger players as well as give more time to pace bowlers Graeme Cessford and Charlie Morris.

It was also good to get a sneak preview of the 50-over format which will be back on the calendar next year. I haven’t played it for some time and a few players have never experienced it.

There’s quite a big difference from the 40-over game because the middle period is extended by 10 overs and you can’t go quite as hard at the top of the innings.

There are also two new white balls during the match so the ball stays a lot harder than it does in the 40-over game because it’s only 25 overs old.

That made a difference so there’s a lot to think about — but I think it will be a good format next season.

Our YB40 campaign, which continued against Warwickshire yesterday, has been disappointing this year but, even though we can’t qualify, we want to finish off well.

It is a difficult competition to progress in with only the group winners qualifying.
