DEFEATING Nottinghamshire by 38 runs in the Yorkshire Bank 40 at Trent Bridge was Worcestershire’s best result of the season, according to director of cricket Steve Rhodes.
The County, who were already out of the qualification picture, revelled in their underdog status to dismiss the Group ‘A’ leaders for 182 having posted 220-8.
Captain Daryl Mitchell led the way with 56, aided by 38 from Thilan Samaraweera and Alexei Kervezee’s 31, before Moeen Ali, newly named in the England Lions squad, took 3-28, Charlie Morris 2-25 and Jack Shantry 2-27.
“I think that was the best win of the season,” said Rhodes. “To go to Trent Bridge, a big Test ground, for a day-night fixture with a big crowd and beat a side with several international players was a really big effort.
“I was very pleased with the way we applied ourselves and our commitment levels.”
The victory was the latest in a spate of successes over teams challenging for honours, which included wins against Somerset and Northamptonshire in the FriendsLife t20.
But those have also been punctuated with disappointing defeats to leave the New Road side out of the running in both of the limited over competitions.
Rhodes puts it down to a youthful team and says they are striving to improve.
