MOEEN Ali and Gareth Andrew have handed Worcestershire a double boost ahead of tomorrow’s Yorkshire Bank 40 Group ‘A’ opener at Sussex (1.45pm) by committing their futures to the club.
England Lion Moeen has agreed a five-year extension to his current contract, due to expire at the end of this season, to keep him at New Road until 2018, while fellow all-rounder Andrew has signed a two-year extension until 2015.
Both have impressed with bat and ball in the early stages of the new LV= County Championship Division Two campaign, with Moeen hitting half-centuries against Hampshire and Glamorgan as well as taking 4-103 against the latter. The 25-year-old also made 78 in the draw against Lancashire at Old Trafford.
Former Somerset star Andrew, 29, struck 52 in that draw last month and took 4-79 in the Glamorgan defeat.
Director of cricket Steve Rhodes, whose side will be looking to improve on last season’s 40-over display, when they finished bottom of their group, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that both Gareth and Moeen have agreed new deals.
“They are game-changing all-rounders and the manner in which they bat and bowl will be an important factor going forward.
“As our number one spinner, number three batsman and one-day opener, Moeen is probably one of the most important players on the staff, so put together they are two of our key all-rounders.
“We’re also proud that we are now seeing the benefits of our hard work. We put a lot of efforts into developing these players and it’s wonderful to secure their futures at the club.”
Moeen joined Worcestershire in 2007 and, on top of scoring eight first-class centuries, has proven his credentials with the ball, including three five-wicket hauls and figures of 12-96 in the LV= County Championship Division One match against Lancashire at Old Trafford last season.
He said: “When I first joined the club many people told me what a fantastic place New Road is to play and they are right, so I am delighted to commit my long-term future to the club.
“The future for Worcestershire looks good and being a part of it excites me. I look forward to helping the club progress back to Division One and winning some trophies.”
Andrew, who has claimed 148 first-class wickets since his County debut in 2008, added: “I’m really happy to extend my stay here at Worcester and am looking forward to the next two years.
“Hopefully, I’ll play an integral part in helping the club progress during what is an exciting time, both on and off the pitch.”
