HAVING experienced Dean Ryan’s coaching methods first-hand during this year’s Six Nations, Warriors’ Scottish international prop Euan Murray is looking forward to renewing acquaintances at Sixways.
Following a three-year hiatus from front-line coaching after leaving his role as director of rugby at Gloucester, Ryan was tempted back by an offer to work with the Scotland forwards under interim head coach Scott Johnson.
The results were noticeable with the Scots enjoying their best campaign in a decade and Murray expects Ryan to deliver similar results with Worcester.
The former British and Irish Lions tighthead said: “I enjoyed working with Dean, he is a very good coach and I think he’ll bring discipline and a hard-work ethic. I think we’ll be a well-drilled team.
“I think the squad for next season is looking good and I’m looking forward to working with the new players.
“There are some good players moving on but, equally, there are some good players coming in.
“It was sad to see Richard Hill go, but I think for next season the squad will be in a different place.
“Richard put together a good squad for next season and I’m sure Dean will be happy with the players he’s going to be working with.
“It’s never nice when people move on, but unfortunately that’s the nature of the business.”
Meanwhile, Warriors forwards coach Nigel Redman has sung the praises of defence coach Phil Larder, who will be retiring at the end of this season.
Redman said: “I think Phil is probably the most experienced defence coach on the planet. I think he has made a big impact here – certainly when he was introduced.
“He was instrumental in the club’s survival when he brought people together and looked at defence from a team perspective.
“Richard then brought Phil back in last year and he has made a terrific contribution to the team. From a personal point of view, he has supported me well over the last two weeks.”
