CHAIRMAN Anthony Hampson wants fans to cherish the memory of Worcester City’s last ever game at St George’s Lane and use it as a catalyst for the future.

More than 4,000 people packed into the stands to mark the end of 108 years of competitive action at the ground.

Although league champions Chester won the match 1-0, Worcester came close to scoring on a number of occasions and gave the crowd plenty to cheer about.

Hampson says the day should live long in the memory but is hoping the spectacle was enough to tempt people to support the club in their exile at Kidderminster Harriers next season.

He said: “It’s an historic day to remember. A lot of people came up to me and said they were at the Lane when Worcester beat Liverpool in 1959. Let’s hope people can cherish the memory of this game.

“We had a great crowd, 4,000 people through the gate and it was a tremendous end of the Lane celebration.

“Let’s hope that some of them will have enjoyed the day and had a taste of the style of football that we can produce and hopefully some of them will take season tickets up. I’ll miss it greatly but we have to move on and try and save the club.”

The City chief added: “I think the organisation was something to be very proud of for Worcester City.

“All the directors did a great job in making the whole match run very smoothly.

“I would like to extend my thanks to them and the stewards as well as the manager and the players who gave us a lot of entertainment.”

It was an emotional day for manager Carl Heeley, who also played 536 times for the club as a player.

He said: “It was a tough day for me personally, I found it incredibly hard. Walking round the perimeter of the pitch at the end with the players, reality sinks in. It’s a sad day to walk away from this ground but we’ve got to move on and try and be as positive as we can. There are memories there that I will never forget but we move on.

“There’s no better feeling than playing football here in my opinion. I’ve played for a long time and experienced lots of games at lots of stadiums but this place is the best.

“It’s no more but we move on and look positively to the future and let’s hope that the people of the city get behind the club because I think we’ve demonstrated it’s worth having a football team.”
