EVESHAM United manager Paul West reckons it could be time for a rethink in how the leagues are structured lower down the non-league pyramid.

The Robins may play four levels below the Football League but they have faced trips to Southampton and Poole in Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West this season.

Last night they travelled to Bridgwater Town in a rearranged match and they are back in Somerset tomorrow for the last-day clash against Taunton Town (3pm).

West admitted it is getting increasingly difficult for the Spiers and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium club.

As well as travelling costs, the Robins boss, who has seen his budget reduced by a third this season, said players have to take time off for long trips in mid-week.

He said: “I have always wanted to play at the highest level possible but you have to be realistic and maybe we need to look at the pyramid system.

“I remember playing when we had a Midlands league but now it’s gone north and south. I have got lads who are on £20 and £30 a week for playing football so it is difficult when you need time off work.

“It’s the players I am more concerned about rather than the outlay of the coach because we were going to have to do that anyway.

“We want to finish the season positively.”
