AS part of the Worcester Warriors rugby committee’s new vision for the future, chairman Bill Bolsover insists all players and coaches need to live within 40 minutes of Sixways.
What impact this will have on the likes of Penarth-based team manager Alun Carter, part-time attack coach Mathieu Rourre, who jets in from Biarritz on a monthly basis, and Phil Larder, who divides his time between Yorkshire and Spain, is not yet clear.
Bolsover believes this strategy will help to forge a stronger bond at the club and will be important as Warriors look to regroup after the sacking of Richard Hill and subsequent appointment of Dean Ryan as director of rugby.
Bolsover even went as far as saying his policy was a key factor in the recruitment process of Hill’s successor.
He said: “I want people at this club who live within 40 minutes of Sixways – it is a fact we would not have employed someone who lived in Ireland and would have came here for five days a week.
“If you’re going to be in this club, you have to be here. The day rugby operations director Corin Palmer started with us, he rented a house in Worcester.
“I believe that if you’re going to be in a business, you live with that business. You go to the pub in the evening and you take the plaudits, or you take the b******ings and you understand what is happening in your marketplace.
“When I first came and got involved here, I said we want — from boot-room to boardroom — one team of people who drive this club.”
Meanwhile, Bolsover also revealed that, prior to his sacking, Hill admitted privately he felt he had taken Warriors as far as he could.
The former Leicester Tigers main sponsor added: “Richard did exactly what was asked of him.
“His job was to take us from the Championship into the Premiership and then move us on from there.
“He held us in the right position, but we didn’t believe — and Richard himself didn’t believe — he was going to move us any further forward, so now is the time to make the change.
“We made the change now because we wanted to give the new person as long as we can to do what he needs to sort out the club for the future, as that will be his role as director of rugby.”
n Worcester are holding an age-group girls tournament tomorrow at Weston Fields for the under 15 and under 18 teams from around the country.
The first match kicks off at 11am and entry is free.
