IT’S fair to say Charlie Little’s revelation that Warriors are planning to play more of their Aviva Premiership home games on Friday nights has proved to be a contentious issue among Worcester fans.
As soon as I posted a link to my interview with the Sixways managing director on Twitter, my phone lit up like a Chirstmas tree with the club’s supporters eager to have their say.
On the whole, marginally more fans seem to be against the plan, but the idea has certainly polarised opinion among the club’s fan-base. Here are a selection of the comments I received.
Paul Jones @PaulyJ84 Fine by me! Solves the working Saturdays and rushing to the game problem!
Steve Dorans @SteveDorans So now my 7 year old can’t see Warriors. Makes me so angry. Kingsholm beckons so he can watch top class rugby.
Matthew Fearnley @madmechanic78 That makes it rather difficult for people like me to get there. Great.
Nigel Weaver @nigelweaver I like the odd Friday nighter but getting away from 6ways is a real pain whether driving or using the P&R and walkways unlit.
Is it the novelty of Friday nights which bring in the fans? What happens when the novelty wears out?
Lindsay Clayton @waddayaknow There should be a good mix of Friday and Saturday games. Some struggle to get to Friday games.
Andrew Smith @andrewsmith151 Love Friday Nights but they need to learn to win in the daylight as well!
David Bryant @davebryantuk I can watch Warriors on Friday night and @UptonRugbyClub on Saturday #winwin. A poll among season ticket holders useful tho?
Richard Scott @RickStryker1979 Great for us who have our own sporting commitments on Saturdays, also gives you an extra day to recover from the hangover!
leigh hinton @hints15 Kept Newcastle in the league for years!
Mike Murphy @mikemurphy10 That’s the kids ruled out then from going #pasttheirbedtime The Moan @BootneckWarrior What’s wrong with doing Friday and Saturday games? It’s equal for everyone then. Terrible idea!
Jay @lawio1 I love Friday night games. Atmosphere always seems better in evening matches #COYW Dylan Marks @3rdearmarks I love Friday night games, but not a sensible & sustainable option to go all out — divisive for many local and away supporters. Surely there are other, more traditional ways to try and improve our home record?!
Jonny Pearce @jpearce88 Excellent! Warriors on a Friday, #avfc on a Saturday.
Mike Faulkner @MyFortesolution The atmosphere is definitely better and the players seem to prefer Friday.
Watch Worcester Wanderers on Saturdays instead.
The Egg Chaser @theeggchaser I work next door, so fine by me.
Seems odd timing though as suspect many have STs already.
Mark Hawkins @Hawko1953 Friday nights’ atmosphere is great but would be better with mix as Saturday great for family’s #rugbyfamily #coyw Shane Carr @Shane_Carr_1 This is a great idea — we get results on a friday nite and the atmosphere is excellent under the lights #coyw jen phillips @jenwasp That will make it harder to get to games, we have a 4hr drive as it is.
scott walls @saghq My father works permanant lates, that’s his season ticket finished for next season Mark E P @powelm Brilliant, love my Friday nights!! I’d miss the all-dayers in Wuss though.
Alice Higgins @MrsAliceHiggins That’s awful news. Those of us who live further away struggle with Friday night games and what about away supporters?
John Clark @Clark_J3 Will mean people that play rugby themselves for the local clubs on Saturdays will be able to support the Warriors more often!
Pete Breakwell @BigBreakers No doubt it’s a revenue-based decision, but Friday nights under lights @WorcsWarriors always have the best atmosphere too.
Stretch Sec @1AngryWarrior How many families will be able to go @WorcsWarriors if they are Friday nights.
Non rugby MD thinking only of cash #time4change Richard Cook @cookie_75 It’s great short term, better atmosphere etc but what about next generation of fans as evening games don’t encourage families?
Laurence Fletcher @lauriefletcher I guess the lure of the beer drinkers and the revenue from the park and ride has swayed it. No family season ticket for us then.
Nick Broad @nickbroad Not exactly encouraging younger supporters. Great for me though.
Phil Mackie @philmackie It means I won’t be able to go very often (again) — for those of us not working locally, very difficult to get back in time.
Elizabeth Harman @Lizzara26 Bit disappointing for me personally. Always a rush to get back from work and to the ground on a Fri night.
Django Freeman @MaxKelsey23 That’ll go down well with any Warriors fans who work evenings/night shifts.
Ben James @BenJames40 Not ideal for those that travel a distance, with 8pm kick-offs I’m not home until 11.30/12.00.
Stuart Kirby @StuartKirby1 It will be better in terms of results, but for the fans maybe not? It is something that could either work or not.
