WORCESTER Wolves have further underlined their ambition to be a major force in basketball by forging a link with one of Europe’s leading clubs.

Spanish giants Real Madrid, who are also currently second in the Euroleague, have met with representatives from the University of Worcester-based club over a possible deal.

Madrid’s director of basketball development Alberto Angulo toured the new Worcester Arena, owned by the university, earlier this week with a view to using it for a training camp.

The £15million Hylton Road venue was brought to Angulo’s attention by Dr Alejandro Vaquera, one of Europe’s leading basketball strength coaches.

Currently based at the Henwick Road campus, he is head of sport at Spain’s Leon University, which also has a partnership with the University of Worcester.

Angulo said: “This is an excellent sports venue and with the great living facilities and accommodation at the university, together with the beautiful city, this is certainly something we would be interested in learning more about as we consider bringing some of our teams here in the future.”

Mick Donovan, head of the university’s institute for sport and exercise science, added: “We continue to develop excellent partnerships around the world and, clearly, basketball is an area where we have much to offer.

“We were thrilled to host Alberto and see this as a great opportunity to build upon the excellent contribution that Alejandro has made within our Spanish collaboration.”
