IF Worcester Wolves can beat Leicester Riders and Plymouth Raiders this weekend it will guarantee us fifth place in the British Basketball League.
That is a huge incentive for our final two regular-season matches as it will give us a likely match-up against Surrey Heat in the play-offs quarter-finals which would be a great tie.
There are some goals for us to aim for and I am looking forward to those games tomorrow and Saturday.
Hopefully, by the time I’ve finished with the players this week they’ll be looking forward to them too.
I say that because last weekend was one of contrasts, beating Plymouth Raiders by 20 points last Friday but losing to Glasgow Rocks by 19 on the Sunday.
Against Plymouth, when Alex Owumi scored 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, I got the response I wanted from the team as far as going out there, playing hard and making an effort at both ends of the floor.
I thought we showed glimpses of being back to where we were a few weeks ago.
We played very well for three quarters of the game and although Plymouth slowed us down in the third, we showed a bit of fight and commitment.
However, we went to Glasgow and started off very slowly in the first quarter. We fought back to tie the game at half-time but there was only one team in it in the second-half.
Nobody likes to lose games but it’s the way you lose them. I just felt, as a team, we rolled over too easily and didn’t fight for it in the second-half as we should have done.
We ended up losing quite heavily which was pretty embarrassing.
I’m struggling to work out how we’ve gone from being such a good team before we had the BUCS Championships, and winning eight in a row, to looking like we’re back in pre-season again.
I’m hoping it’s not the players taking their foot off the gas because we want to be going into the play-offs with some winning momentum and knowing that we can win games.
I don’t think it’s that but, one thing’s for sure, we will be looking at putting in some extra training sessions.
If we’re going to play that way and show no fight we might as well do it because we’re tired. I am concerned with the attitude of some of the team and their work ethic and commitment.
For us to be a good team, like any of the clubs I have coached, everybody has to come to the party and do their bit for the group.
You can cope with one player not playing so well but when you have two, three or four who are not contributing what you expect, you’ve got a problem on your hands.
Certainly, we’ve got that right now and I am trying to sort it out.
Having said that, everybody who has seen us play this year knows that when we all play well we can beat anybody in the league as we have proved this season.
