WORCESTER City are ready to end the season on a high after winning for the first time in 10 attempts.
Easter Monday’s 3-2 victory over Oxford City at St George’s Lane brought an end to one of the worst sequences of results in the club’s history.
Having not won since February 9, or scored since the 16th of that month, there were joyous scenes following goals from Mike Symons, Kieron Morris and Shabir Khan.
Manager Carl Heeley described victory as a huge relief and is now looking to channel the renewed confidence into the last five matches of the campaign, beginning at Workington this Saturday.
He said: “We’re all at a loss to explain why the run’s happened but it has.
“It’s certainly the worst run I’ve ever experienced in my career as player and manager so I hate to think what it must have been like for some of those young lads.
“It was nice to win, great to do it on home soil and we can relax now.
“We’ve got rid of that burden and we can go and enjoy the rest of the season.”
He continued: “I’m sure the fans are as relieved as us because, although we wren’t particularly looking over our shoulders, we were looking below us than above us for the first time this season in the last couple of weeks.
“It’s nice to get that win and see the back of 41 points at last to move on positively for the last few games.”
Heeley’s belief in his players has never wavered and he was delighted with the spirit shown, highlighted by the team congregating in a huddle following the final whistle.
He said: “It’s very easy to start criticising people when things are not going well.
“The hardest thing to do is to stick with them, keep patting them on the back and not burdening them with the extra pressure.
“If people want to criticise then criticise me and leave the lads alone because they try hard.
“Yes, we’ve made mistakes and things haven’t gone for us and at times you think the world’s against us but we’ve stuck together.”
Of the match, Heeley added: “It was a good performance. We’ve done a lot of soul-searching and it’s been a long time coming but I’m relieved more than anything that we’ve finally got a foothold back in our season.”
