A FINE all-round performance by Moeen Ali, including a century, gave Worcestershire a two-wicket victory when they took on Glamorgan in a one-day pre-season friendly at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat first, under dry but blustery conditions, and it was a blistering start from Glamorgan as the opening pair of Mark Wallace and Stewart Walters put on 82, inside 13 overs.

This was before they both succumbed to off-spinner Moeen, who trapped Wallace lbw for 49 and then bowled Walters for 29, with the score on 99-2 in the 17th over.

Then, on 104, the third wicket fell as Will Bragg chipped a Daryl Mitchell delivery straight back to the visiting captain but Chris Cooke and Ben Wright then steadied the ship as they took the home side past 150 in the 26th over.

Their fourth wicket partnership ended on 47 when Brett D’Oliveira trapped Wright lbw for 16 and it soon became 152-5 when Cooke was caught by Alexei Kervezee at deep mid-wicket off Neil Pinner for 47.

Nick James was the sixth wicket to fall for Glamorgan when he was run out for three and when Jack Shantry bowled Andrew Salter for 0 off the next delivery the home side had stuttered to 160-7 in the 29th over.

Gareth Rees and Dean Cosker added 35 for the eighth wicket before Cosker was bowled by Graeme Cessford.

Moeen then took his third wicket when Will Owen was caught at long-off by D’Oliveira, as Glamorgan ended up on 221-9 off their allotted 40 overs, with Moeen taking 3-25 for the visitors.

Mitchell and Moeen opened the batting for Worcestershire and their partnership reached 32 when Mitchell was caught in the fifth over and then four overs later Kervezee, after striking four boundaries, was bowled for 22, with the score on 62-2.

Pinner was the third wicket to fall but Moeen maintained his aggression as he reached his fifty off 41 balls.

In the 16th over Worcestershire had reached 116-3 but then two wickets fell in the space of three balls as Matt Pardoe and Gareth Andrew departed.

With the game in the balance Moeen and Michael Johnson tried to get Worcestershire’s run-chase back on track and by the 27th over the pair had reached their 50 partnership.

Moeen went on to complete a brilliant century off just 81 balls before he was caught for 103 off 84 balls, with 10 fours and three sixes, with the score on 183-6 in the 29th over.

Johnson had gone on to 35 before he was caught in the deep and then Joe Leach cracked two successive fours to take Worcestershire closer to victory. He was run out for 18 with the score on 220-8 before Cessford struck the winning runs.
