WORCESTER City’s terrible luck with injuries has gone from bad to worse with Danny Edwards facing months on the sidelines with a knee injury.
The left-back was carried off with suspected cruciate ligament damage during the first-half of last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Corby Town.
Play was stopped for several minutes while Edwards was treated at Steel Park and it appears his season is over.
The blow comes just three weeks after Ellis Deeney, who Edwards replaced at left-back, suffered a severely sprained ankle against Vauxhall Motors.
Former Aston Villa youth team captain Deeney has not played since and won’t be involved in today’s Blue Square Bet North match against Oxford City at St George’s Lane (3pm).
Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Corby Town made it a record-equalling nine consecutive league losses for City and created a new low of seven fixtures without a goal.
Manager Carl Heeley said: “We’ve lost Danny to a suspected cruciate ligament injury and if that’s the case, then he’s going to be out for a long time.”
Edwards’ injury compounds a casualty list that has left City desperately depleted in defence.
Captain Stuart Whitehead aggravated a groin problem at Corby, while centre-half colleague Jacob Rowe is still sidelined with tendonitis in his knee.
Shabir Khan was not fit to play at the weekend but Heeley is hopeful the versatile defender may be able to start against Oxford.
Glyn Thompson has also not recovered from a thigh strain, meaning City will have no keeper cover on the bench.
Heeley added: “Shab could probably have played at a push on Saturday but he wouldn’t have played today and the chances of Stuart playing today are slim after Saturday.
“The sensible thing to do was to play Stuart and give Shab another couple of days.
“I might have to draft a couple of players in who we’ve still got registered with us and go from there.”
Oxford, whose 2-1 loss at home to Solihull Moors last Saturday was their third defeat in four matches, are one point below 14th-placed Worcester in the table but have five games in hand.
When the sides met at Court Place Farm last August, City twice let a lead slip in a dramatic 2-2 draw.
