WORCESTER City fans have snapped up close to 2,000 tickets for the final league match at St George’s Lane.

There is now a little over a month before Blue Square Bet North champions-elect Chester visit for the historic match to mark the end of 108 years of competitive action at the ground.

Tickets have been selling steadily and the club have now sold around 2,000 to their own supporters, with a further 672 going to Chester for the Canal End and block ‘D’ of the main stand.

The capacity of the ground has been reduced to around 4,000 following a safety review but that still leaves room for around 1,500 more supporters.

Although the visitors have asked for more, Worcester, who travel to Altrincham today (3pm), are keen to sell as many as possible to their own fans and are urging people to get theirs.

City also don’t want to further cut the capacity, which they might have to do if Chester took up more of the ground because space would have to be left between rival supporters under segregation rules.

If filled to the current level of 4,000, it would be Worcester’s largest gate since the FA Cup second round match against Huddersfield Town in December 2005.

There are only two more home games left before the Chester clash with Oxford City visiting on Easter Monday, April 1, and City host bottom-of-the-table Hinckley United on Saturday, April 13.

The final Monday night fixture under the floodlights has been and gone following the 3-0 defeat to Gainsborough Trinity, which disappointingly attracted the lowest crowd of the season of 536.

To sit in the main stand for the Chester match costs £14 for adults, £10 for concessions, £7 for those aged 16 to 21 and £5 for under 16s.

On the terraces it is £12, £8, £5 and £3 respectively to stand.

Tickets can be bought at the club office, by calling 01905-23003 or on matchdays in the Legends Bar.

Meanwhile, City’s supporters’ club have cancelled today’s coach to Altrincham due to weather.
