CARL Heeley admits he is flattered to be linked with Telford United but says his sole focus is on securing points for Worcester City.

There has been speculation in recent days suggesting Heeley was a target for the Blue Square Bet Premier strugglers, who have just appointed coach John Psaras until the end of the season.

Although the 43-year-old had been quick to dismiss the talk, Heeley said in the match programme for last Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Boston United that “I would have a decision to make” if the Bucks came calling.

However, he insists success for the St George’s Lane club is his only concern, starting at home to Gainsborough Trinity tonight (7.45) — the last ever floodlit match at the Lane.

Heeley said: “I’m not going to lie. To have your name mentioned with a club the size of Telford is flattering but it’s speculation and it’s nothing more than speculation.

“There’s been no approach either to me or the club. I have got nothing to suggest an approach will come but we’ll deal with that as and when. It’s hypothetical at the moment.”

He continued: “What I am respectful of is I am manager of Worcester City, I’ve been here a very long time and the club’s very close to my heart. I want more than anything to get some success at this club.

“Yes, we may have some tough times ahead, a lot tougher than they are now, but I’m not one to shirk it.

“I’m here and all I’m concentrating on is trying to get the next points on the board.”

Despite seeing his side slump to a sixth successive defeat against the Pilgrims, Heeley believes the club can be proud of their efforts this term.

He said: “We have done well. Maybe I got carried away with myself, I wanted to be right up there challenging for the play-offs and maybe we’ve been a little bit over optimistic but I still firmly believe in what we have shown at stages this season.

“If I’m truthful, the clubs who are now in the play-off positions are evolving, making big signings and swapping their squad around and that’s something unfortunately we are not in the position to do.”

New signings winger Kieron Morris, on loan from Walsall, and striker Ethan Moore both made their debuts against Boston and could get their chance again tonight.

Charlie Reece and Matt Breeze could also be in the reckoning having appeared as subs at the weekend.

Michael Taylor and Greg Mills were both left out of the squad and will be hoping to force their way back into contention.
