ENDING their three-game goal drought will be top of Worcester City’s agenda as they seek a first home win of 2013 today.

City come into the Blue Square Bet North match against Boston United (3pm) having failed to hit the target in 275 minutes of football.

Danny Edwards was the last player to breach an opposition defence when he fired home a late consolation in the 3-1 defeat at Harrogate Town on February 16.

They did everything but score in running Guiseley close at the Lane seven days later but were comprehensively beaten 5-0 at Halifax and struggled to create chances of note in losing 1-0 at Vauxhall Motors last Saturday.

So to say that City are long overdue a goal would be putting it mildly.

What they would give for an early strike against the Pilgrims this afternoon to ease the nerves.

Yet it’s not as if Worcester are not used to scoring. After all, they had managed to score at least one in each of their six matches prior to this barren run.

Danny Glover was a man in form having bagged five in four games in taking his tally for the campaign into double figures.

Strike partner Michael Taylor had also pounced for three goals in five matches during that period in moving his total for the term to eight.

Leading marksman Mike Symons is perhaps the exception to that, his effort against Stalybridge Celtic last month being his only goal since the turn of the year.

But, after notching 11 up to the start of December, it is surely only a matter of time before he starts to score again when he eventually returns from an ankle injury.

Symons was one of the chief reasons Carl Heeley’s team were such a potent threat in front of goal in the early stages of the campaign, scoring five in the opening four games.

Before the end of September, Worcester had hit the target 17 times in the league, managing at least two goals in every game when they did score.

City also breached the opposition back-line in every league encounter during October and November.

Two blanks in December were followed by one against Altrincham in January, after which they rediscovered their scoring touch.

It has deserted them in recent weeks but history suggests it won’t be long before City are back on the goals trail.
