ROYAL Grammar School Worcester reclaimed the Worcester City Cup from rivals King’s School with a 2-1 win in the final derby to be played at St George’s Lane.
King’s started the game more confidently and dominated the early play, enjoying the majority of possession and keeping RGS penned back in their own half with a strong pressing game combined with crisp, accurate passing.
Despite the pressure, the RGS defence, marshalled superbly by Chip Lawton, held firm and keeper Dan Goodyear was only called upon to make routine saves.
Gradually, RGS came into the game but neither side were able to break down two competent defences.
After the interval, the game changed with RGS pushing forward and enjoying more of the play.
Ten minutes after the break, RGS took the lead with a superb counter-attack.
Captain Ray Morris freed Zac Turley into space on the left and his accurate cross was steered home by Alex Wyer.
King’s responded almost immediately, bundling in a corner, but RGS retook the lead with 15 minutes remaining, Tim Parkinson-Allsopp expertly lifting the ball over the King’s goalkeeper from 18 yards.
Although King’s pressed forward, the RGS defensive line held firm while the speedy Wyer always looked dangerous on the counter-attack.
At the final whistle, RGS lifted the trophy, giving them an enviable record of five wins and three draws from 10 years of annual matches at the Lane.
