FEBRUARY has been an excellent month for Worcester Wolves following six victories in a row.
It is the first time we have completed a calendar month this season without losing, although we have gone close on a couple of occasions.
We have beaten Manchester Giants, Mersey Tigers, London Lions, Surrey Heat and Durham Wildcats in the British Basketball League but the big game was winning at Newcastle in the BBL Trophy quarter-finals.
It is our best spell so far without question.
We are really playing within ourselves now, there is a good team chemistry and everyone is playing consistently game after game.
We’ve got over our start-of-the-season blues and we are a tough team to beat now.
That was shown with the 99-81 win against Surrey last Friday, in which Kai Williams scored 24 points, and the 83-79 victory at Durham last Sunday.
Surrey was always going to be a tricky game, we hadn’t played well against them all season and we should have beaten them the last time out.
But it was a fantastic game. We shot the ball exceptionally well and shared it with something like 25 assists, which is a season high for us.
We dominated them on the rebounds so really took care of business at both ends of the floor. It was a really professional performance.
It was nervy at Durham against a side I rate quite highly so it was a battle for us.
We really had to tough the game out and it came down to the last two minutes. Up until that point it was anybody’s game.
I think we are playing well at the right time given the importance of the games that are coming up, starting with this weekend’s BBL Trophy semi-final against Leicester Riders tomorrow and Saturday.
To peak at the right time is what we train for and we have to continue to work hard. We have cut back our training a little bit so it’s shorter but more focused and disciplined so we can rest legs.
The players have responded really well to the way we’ve adjusted our training and the strength and conditioning coaches have done a fantastic job as have the sports psychologists and therapists.
Everybody has played their part in us being where we are now.
Practice this week will be the same, we will look at some analysis of Leicester and at how we can do things better against them.
We’ve played them twice away this season and were shocking so they haven’t seen what we can do and we’ve seen them at their best.
We’re going to show up tomorrow and give them a real run for their money.
My aim has always been to get this team to the point where we were making quarters and semis of competitions and the more of those you get to, the better chance you stand of getting to a final.
This is another opportunity for us and it’s going to be great for the club’s history.
We’re going to go out there and give it everything we’ve got this weekend.
