HEAD coach Paul James wants the Worcester Wolves supporters to create an intimidating atmosphere for Leicester Riders when the teams clash in Friday’s British Basketball League Trophy semi-finals.

The sides meet in the eagerly-anticipated first leg at the University of Worcester (7.30pm) before the return match in the East Midlands 24 hours later.

Wolves are flying at home, having lost just twice on their own court all season, and are determined to take a lead into the second leg.

They are also used to the cramped surroundings of Leicester’s John Sandford Sports Centre, having lost twice there already this season, and James wants to turn the tables on the Riders. He believes the Worcester fans can play their part in inspiring his team to their 12th home triumph of the season.

James said: “With all the success that Leicester have been having lately they are packing out their arena. It is a compact venue with low ceilings and spectators virtually dangling their legs on the edge of the court.

“This intense atmosphere can be intimidating for visiting players and officials. Although I am confident my guys can cope with this, I want to leave nothing to chance so we will be looking to go there with a points advantage already in the bag.

“Friday will be the first time that Leicester will be coming into our house and they will soon realise that it will be a whole different experience from playing in front of their own supporters.

“My team love playing at the university and tell me how much of a boost they get when the crowd get behind them. The fans can be the difference and I want them to show Leicester that we will defend our city to the hilt.”

He added: “We have only lost two games at the university all season, against Durham and Surrey, teams that we have since gained our revenge on.”

Wolves, who have never reached a major final, defeated both Durham Wildcats and Surrey Heat last weekend to extend their unbeaten run in the Championship to six games.

They are expecting tickets to be in demand for Friday’s Trophy tussle and officials are urging fans to guarantee their seat by booking in advance.
