WORCESTER City Chess Club won the Wheatley Cup, beating Greenlands at Greenlands Social Club, Longbridge, Birmingham.
Although Greenlands had a higher-graded team, Worcester clinched a 4-1 success — the fourth time they have won the competition.
The first game to finish saw Greenlands’ only win but Worcester’s skipper Andrew Farthing equalised the score and Worcester went into the lead when Ray Collett won on board two.
The remaining games were going in Worcester’s favour.
But Rob Sutton, a piece up, got into a tangle and had only 10 seconds left to complete his victory by checkmate.
Colin Vernon had completely outplayed his opponent, but lost a rook for a knight in the time scramble and was fortunate to win.
Results (Worcester names first): Farthing beat Roy Peters; Collett beat Ian Truscott; Roger Yates lost to Ian Ellis; Sutton beat Peter Hughes; Vernon beat Richard Collett.
