COMMUNITY spirit was on display at a new event designed to bring Whittington together.

In less than a decade the parish of Whittington on the southern outskirts of Worcester has more than tripled in size.

Members of the fast-growing village got together forming the Whittington Community Events Group (WCEG) and on Saturday, (July 8), it held its first One Parish: One Community event.

Hundreds of families attended the summer fayre event with lots of smiles on people's faces despite the unpredictable weather which included the odd shower.

Among the activities to enjoy were a bouncy castle, fairground games, face painting, sheep petting and a dog show, a magician, music, as well as a bar and food stalls.

Police and firefighters dropped in during the day at the event at Pond Farm on Church Lane, with children given the chance to sit in their vehicles and meet the emergency responders.

Adam Hooper from WCEG said: "You have got two housing estates, with young families, and we felt 'what are we doing for kids?'

"We decided to organise this, and it has been brilliant.

"Let's do something for the people, let's do cool stuff.

"We would like it to become an annual event.

"We are also talking about doing an open cinema and a Santa sleigh at Christmas.

"It is building the community spirit."

Mr Hooper said the money taken in was to help them cover costs and break even, build reserves to organise future events and anything left over going to charity.

Villager Nick Hodgetts, who hosted the event on his land, said: "We are just pleased to engage the village in something communal.

"So much work has gone into making it happen. There's 40 local businesses here."

Peggy Sue's Bar, based in Kempsey, was among those at the event. Emma Tart added "We are normally weddings but today we are here.

"It has been a success - there's a lot going on."
