A planning application to build a new training centre in Dines Green has been submitted by the council.

The new Building Block centre is set to be built at the Green Hub in Gresham Road, Dines Green, Worcester, and will provide training for a range of trades and skills.

The new skills centre will be run by Worcester Community Trust and will be offering courses in literacy and IT, customer service training as well as bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing and green trades such as solar and heat pump installation engineers.

Worcester City Council has now submitted a planning application for the work which has been designed to emulate the success of the first Building Block centre in Warndon.

Building the new training centre would result in the loss of eight parking spaces.

An extra six cycling spaces and an electric vehicle charging point would also be provided.

The workshop and classroom could hold up to 60 people, but the training courses are expected to attract between 24 and 30 people needing to use both teaching spaces at one time.

The courses would take place during the weekend and the rooms might also be hired out for other courses at weekends in the future.

The new Building Block training centre in Dines Green is one of several projects in the city that has used almost £20 million of government Towns Fund money including the new Three Counties Medical School at the former Worcester News offices in Hylton Road and the new Kepax Bridge from Gheluvelt Park.

The first Building Block in Shap Drive, Warndon, hosts workshops developing DIY and building skills including bricklaying, plumbing, plastering, tiling and woodwork and opened in 2015.

The building was extended last year after the city council said the popular teaching facility was increasingly fully booked and had a waiting list that was continuing to grow.

The extension allowed the centre to add electrical courses to the list of training offered.
