A CRASH which saw a car smash through railings on a narrow city road has prompted a council investigation.

A driver was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after the crash involving two vehicles in Lansdowne Crescent at about 2.30am on Sunday, July 2.

Worcestershire County Council's Highways team closed a section of the path as a precaution following the crash and pedestrians were advised to walk on the other side of the street.

The council has now said it will investigate to see if changes are needed on the road.

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council, said: “We’re aware of the incident on Lansdowne Crescent and have installed safety fencing at the location, whilst repair works are planned and undertaken.

“Following an incident like this, we will investigate to see if any road safety measures are required, including the appropriateness of the speed limit in the area, and discuss with the local county councillor.”

Cllr Matthew Jenkins wants to make the road safer but is unsure of the best course of action to take.

He said: "It is early days yet but it is something I want to resolve. The end of the road is essentially a blind corner.

"It is really concerning as something needs to be done, but we cannot exactly stop people from travelling at this speed in the early hours of the morning.

"I think a 20mph speed limit is a no-brainer due to how narrow the road is, but the signs cannot guarantee this will be followed at all hours of the day."

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said the emergency services were at the scene for "a few hours".

They said: "The police, fire service and ambulances were all in attendance for some time, as it took them a while to release the passengers.

"We know the fire crew were speaking to at least one person in the car trying to keep them calm.

"The emergency services worked for a few hours to get the vehicle out."

"I have not seen any fatalities being reported which frankly was very lucky for the occupants of the car."

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service attended to make the vehicle safe, saying that nobody was trapped in the vehicles involved.
