SIR – Readers of the Worcester News may be interested in my take on our Prime Ministers over the past 30 years.

Maggie Thatcher: decisive, as the northern miners will attest. Removed from office on the orders of Brussels, whose guns she was attempting to spike. Her successors have lacked just about every quality that the post requires.

John Major: likeable, well meaning but totally out of his depth in the job and crucially lacking insider information on the ‘Federal Europe plot’ that Brussels was hatching.

Signed the damaging Maastricht Treaty – unread.

Tony Blair: looked promising for a few months and handled the Diana situation well. He got a buzz from playing world statesman when his qualities fitted him more for Durham County Council. Signed the Nice Treaty without reading it, which was by now becoming the norm.

Gordon Brown: has forever made the case against PMs who succeed to the post. He was limited, surly and sold half of our gold reserves at a knockdown price. Signed the Lisbon Treaty – later than everyone else due to a diary mix-up – unread of course.

David Cameron: freshfaced, cheerful and limited (good start) and has as his aide the hapless Clegg (not from Last of the Summer Wine) but Nicholas William Clegg, a Euro gravy train rider who is limitlessly limited.

So where next? A good oldfashioned dictator, maybe, like Cromwell, who sorted out the Stuarts; Mussolini, who had nice uniforms; or Castro, who is well-liked in Cuba, I understand.

Worth a try?
