Sir – After reading John Phillpott’s EU-themed article (Worcester News, May 12), it did make me consider what may have actually happened to this country if those D-Day landings had not occurred almost 67 years ago.
Would we have been eventually governed by those posing a threat from across the channel? A puppet administration installed by the invaders, inflicting stringent taxes and laws.
Freedom of speech curtailed, in particular from outspoken MPs, broadcasters and journalists, with the threat of punishment if judged to have made an unacceptable statement by the authorities.
The population under constant electronic surveillance, guards located at schools and hospitals, body armoured, black-shirted police patrolling our streets.
Tens of thousands of workers and their families imported from occupied countries and former colonies, ensuring an acute shortage of accommodation and mass unemployment, thus ensuring minimal wage demands.
Dependency on imported fuel, with the majority of British coal mines closed down due to their claimed contribution to global warming resulting in crippling domestic energy bills for the population.
Hundreds of traditional community meeting places such as churches, corner shops, public houses and post offices also closed to deter gatherings. It certainly makes me contemplate “What if”.
