SIR – Walking through Worcester recently I’ve noticed the appearance of some thought-provoking (and provocative) graffiti.
In London Road I read ‘Citizen not subject’ and later in Wyld’s Lane ‘Why can’t I be king?’ – the style and lettering of each suggesting the same artist.
Both sets appeared over the last few weeks, presumably in reaction to a recent event.
I actually smiled to myself when I read some graffiti in Tolladine Road: ‘Tolly kids at uni not Tories’ kids, which even had the apostrophe correctly positioned.
At some point, someone had interjected ‘just’ between ‘not’ and ‘Tories’’ thus underscoring their own personal commitment to equal opportunities.
No doubt you’ll now receive many letters condemning graffiti artists as irresponsible louts defacing the face of the city, but I’d love to know whether other Worcester News readers have come across similar examples of such typically underplayed British-style subversion.
There are just some occasions when it pays to stop, reflect and think about the point that’s being made.
