SIR – There appears to be a growing misunderstanding of the purpose of traffic lights near to roundabouts.
I have observed recently, both as a driver and as a pedestrian, near misses at the major roundabout on City Walls Road in Worcester.
Some drivers approaching from the north appear to think that the lights controlling the pedestrian crossing immediately before the roundabout also control the roundabout.
This confusion also applies to other roundabouts about the country and some drivers seem to think that a green light allows them to enter the roundabout without the usual giving way to cars already on the roundabout.
It appears there are accidents just waiting to happen. Drivers on the roundabout need to be alert to the possibility of cars entering the roundabout at speed the drivers of which fully believe that they are in the right.
I have no idea what can be done about this, short of moving crossings away from roundabouts. But in the meantime, take care.
