SIR – I wonder if many Worcester News readers are aware of the impending loss of one of Worcester’s prized assets, the riverside’s dark night sky and its rural characteristics – a “tourist attraction”, according to Destination Worcestershire.
Very soon the towpath will be illuminated all the way from South Quay to the canal, possibly further.
No longer will it be possible to view the sunset from the cathedral side of the river Severn unaffected by artificial lighting.
Last night [Tuesday, May 10] I was privileged to witness the moon and bright starry sky reflected in the glassy, still surface of the river with swans drifting silently past – an idyllic scene sadly about to become merely a memory.
I suspect many local people and visitors alike will be sad to learn of this demise. The character of the area is to be changed forever but because of the lateness of the information and lack of proper consultation with local residents, no provision has been made available to make formal objections to the lighting scheme.
