SIR – Nevill Swanson suggests (Letters, January 31) that the Diglis Bridge be renamed the Derek Prodger MBE Bridge.

The Vesta Tilley Society is campaigning hard for the bridge to be called the Vesta Tilley Bridge.

Vesta Tilley is probably the most famous woman to have been born in Worcester and has virtually nothing to commemorate her in the city.

We already have huge support for the project from among others, Worcester Technical College, RGS Worcester, Bishop Perowne CE College, Nunnery Wood High School, Christopher Whitehead Language College, Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, New College Worcester and Tudor Grange Academy, as well as the lord lieutenant, the mayor and Lord Faulkner of Worcester.

Worthy as Derek Prodger may be, considering him in this context will immediately make it a political issue.

Vesta Tilley is non-controversial and non-political.
