SIR - In answer to R G Spencer, he blames me for something I did not write. He held that the 1992 Maastrich Treaty was responsible for the lack of community policing and then blamed British politicians for implementing the so-called EU diktats.
In my letter, I pointed out that the demise of community policing can be traced back to 30 or 40 years ago. Britain was not even a member of the then Common Market.
At my college English class in the 80s, we studied the pros and cons of community policing and the urban riots. Britain was then a mere junior member of the EEC.
