SIR - My children really enjoyed playing in the fountains at the quay near the Cathedral today. What a fantastic way of cooling off in the heat -and it's free! However, I would like to comment on a safety issue that became apparent.
There is very little protection to prevent a child falling into the river. I was most surprised to see that no extra measures had been put in place for the summer months. The fountains are clearly for children to enjoy - and they certainly do - yet, with the them being so close to the water's edge there is a real possibility of a very serious accident.
Of course, parents are responsible for their children but it would only take a second for a toddler to run off while the adult is distracted. I have written to the city council and look forward to safety measures being put in place.
