SIR – I doubt if I am the only Worcester motorist overtaken by vehicles on the downward slope, clearly exceeding 30mph, when leaving the lights at the end of Deansway approaching the river bridge.
I see brake lights brighten as the speed camera is approached. Once past the camera, I hear revving engines accelerate away towards the Bull Ring traffic lights.
If motorists understood the meaning of the word “limit”, accepted this as a maximum speed, and stuck to it, there may be some justification for consideration of raising some speed limits.
But currently, it could be disastrous. As well as risking more deaths and injuries, pedestrians and cyclists would be discouraged at a time when every encouragement needs to be given to increase these means of travelling. The “Drive Faster” headline on November 30 was singularly ill judged in its promotion of speed.
Surely the safety of all road users, especially cyclists and pedestrians, is more important than a dramatic headline?
Colin Archer,
Worcester.
