SIR – Regarding speed limits. It is the driver rather than the speed that is the issue, although it is obvious that the higher the speed the greater risk of fatality.
It seems to me that the safe driving of forklift trucks receives more attention than safe car driving, with requirements for medical checks and regular reassessments of competence. The mental and physical reaction times of tens of thousands of drivers may be impaired by arthritic joints, poor eyesight, the side effects of drugs such as painkillers, statins and anti-depressants. Add to that alcohol abuse, street drugs, immaturity, inexperience and plain anti-social behaviour and it gives you something to think about when you are approaching another car on our crowded roads at a closing speed of 80mph.
