SIR – With reference to the article about replacing Elgar’s statue with one of Chicken George (December 5).
No doubt the Facebook campaign was started by someone back from a night out down the pub who, if they knew Chicken George, viewed him through rose tinted spectacles or, if not, had been given the impression he was some kind of Worcester icon.
Personally, being I hope a somewhat more mature and sensible adult George was to me at his best a self-made “character” and attention-seeker and at his worse not a very nice person.
Visitors to Worcester come here with Elgar in mind and I am sure enjoy viewing his statue. Imagine, if we had one of George, you can just hear the comments, “who is this George bloke then?”
Maurice Francis,
Worcester.
