SIR – I think it’s not unfair to point out that there are still significant numbers of residents in Upton-upon-Severn who do not support creating a large unsightly wall along the river bank which is part of the so-called deal to get the Environment Agency to fund flood defences.
We are told by Mary Dhonau, of the National Flood Forum, that we must accept the whole deal as it stands or possibly not get any of the funding.
I would ask the EA to think hard about its failure to address the most important question of the Hanley Road entrance. It is a badly affected strategic entrance to the town. They should not waste funds on Tunnel Hill Road, which was only affected in 2007.
A high wall along the riverside will almost certainly adversely affect the appearance of this part of the town’s conservation area very badly and will protect only a few businesses.
Visitors and residents alike are extremely concerned about the impact on the appearance of this scenic area, whatever a list of signatures might suggest.
