SIR – I attended an orphanage school where we were expected to be seen but not heard. Sport was my main way of letting off steam as we were silenced at mealtimes if we became too noisy. That and a number of things made verbal expression difficult. However, we otherwise enjoyed an excellent education, especially in English, and I soon became an enthusiastic letter writer.
I was interested in Claire Fry’s article on the history made recently by members of the United Kingdom Youth Parliament (UKYP) when they debated in the House of Commons across the green chamber. More than 300 youths aged 11 to 18 debated subjects such as free university places, youth crime, free transport for under 25s, job opportunities and the possibility of votes at 16.
The UKYP are now working on manifestos for local, regional and national elections. Many think politicians can be all hot air. One might think the same of the UKYP. But it’s a free country allowing anyone freedom of expression. Good luck to those youngsters.
