SIR –Regarding your daily poll on the question ‘Did you observe the two minutes silence?’ 92 per cent said yes, five per cent forgot and three per cent chose not to. At least the five per cent were honest, if uncaring, but the three per cent should be ashamed.

Those we were sparing just two minutes’ silence for gave their lives, making it possible for us all to have such an honour, a thing which would not have been possible if the likes of Hitler had been triumphant.
