Sir – Re: Street-cleaning. With the prohibitive cost of maintenance on machinery, how about giving a person on the dole a decent wage to look after their own patch?
I’m sure you would get some takers for this during the current state of the job market. Also, a manual worker can get in between parked vehicles whereas a machine cannot and they could pick up the broken glass on pavements which the machines never touch.
Surely after costing it would be cheaper in the long run to use manual labour than rely on machinery.
