Sir – David Cameron has announced he can no longer support a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty and instead has put forward a set of cynical proposals on his policy towards the EU if he was elected PM. These proposals are dishonest and not worth the paper they are written on.

He knows the Lisbon Treaty means the EU is now a legal sovereign body and can proceed according to its own wishes and never again needs to consult with us, the citizens. Also, any attempt to claim back some of the powers of the EU have to be agreed by the other 26 member countries which is totally unlikely.

As a result of his change of mind, all three parties in the House of Commons are committed to the EU and only UKIP is there to oppose them.
