SIR – Our Armed Forces have fought with courage to bring the people of Afghanistan to the threshold of democracy.
It’s now up to the Afghans to decide on the democratic country they want. If Afghanistan descends into chaos, then so be it. The natural state of Afghanistan for decades has been one of warring factions that not even the might of the Russian army had been able to quell. The money saved by ending our military commitment in Afghanistan can be reallocated to defending the UK against terrorism.
Our armed forces have performed heroically under appalling conditions. The sacrifice of our young servicemen and women has been great. Given the size of the US and UK populations, UK combat fatalities have been relatively greater than those of the US.
Afghanistan may continue to be a breeding ground for terrorists and a threat to our nation, so it is imperative resources are reallocated to protect our borders from those who would do us harm.
Should we bring our troops home, heroes one and all?
