Sir – I have, over the years, read many articles and letters in the Worcester News regarding university students’ alleged poor conduct and the presentation of a negative opinion of the university’s place in our city. This year I’ve enrolled as a journalism student at the grand old age of 31, and I believe students are being harshly judged. I have been surprised at the levels of maturity my younger classmates display. We should be proud that Worcester University has developed into a magnificent institution, saving the historic Castle Street building from the ignominy of lesser developments and building a world class library accessible to all.
Stories about feckless students abandoning their cars on local streets may excite readers of a certain disposition, but it should be pointed out that the majority don’t drive – they can’t afford to and live close to campus. It is more plausible those cars belong to university staff.
I’m not suggesting all complaints are without foundation but I would venture that Worcester is a far better place with the vibrancy, trade and optimism that students bring to the city.
