Sir – I recently watched a programme called A Tale of Two Britains.

It charted the fortunes and moods of England in the 1930s.

It showed the rise of optimism and public wealth during the early 30s and the later feeling of unease, that all was not well with the world, when information became more widely available.

I was struck with the similarity of today.

My feeling, and those of many friends, is one of gloomy trepidation, a fear that something big lies round the corner. It’s a gut feeling and non-specific, but we all have it. Are we alone in this deeply disturbing foreboding? Whether it is the EU, immigration or both, I feel the clouds are once again gathering.
