SIR – The Nobel committee said that Barack Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples”.

President Obama is responsible for dropping bombs on Pakistan and Afghanistan and Iraq, defending Israel from war crimes and is head of the largest military in the world. How can he possibly be awarded the peace price?

It would appear that the Nobel committee has been mesmerised by Obama’s stylish rhetoric. However, Obama ought to have been judged on his actions not words.
