SIR – I was pleased to read the article about the litter pick undertaken by Lois Stephen, the Green Party candidate, and his team.
Unfortunately, there seems to be a few people who believe that they can drop litter anywhere they like and someone will pick it up. In general they are right because if we didn’t have council staff and teams like Mr Stephen’s, who regularly collect the litter strewn indiscriminately by people who care little about the way our city looks, we would be in a terrible mess.
I was walking along the City Walls road yesterday and, at the St Martin’s Gate end – where the wall has the only remaining evidence of a tower that was part of the city wall – I was appalled to see that the tenants of the flats above the city wall clearly toss their cigarette ends from their balconies onto the footpath below. Their cigarette butts also decorate the shelves created by the stones in the monument.
If they were fined for littering in this way perhaps they would think twice before doing it.
I write as someone who was taught by her parents to take her litter home.
Wendy Easter,
Worcester.
