SIR – Local councillors who voted to use council funds to set up regional offices in Brussels may be in for a shock – the money used may have to be repaid by the councillors themselves as the regional offices are self-made and have no legal entitlement to council money.

Mr Bushill-Matthews, member of the European Parliament, said in this newspaper that the European Union has nothing to do with setting up regional offices, so who is paying their wages and pension?

I must admit they have done a good job so far, most of our counties are resigned to being wiped off the map and willingly support region status. We have the police, fire service, ambulance service and planning office all merging into regional boundaries as fast as they can before the gullible public realise what’s going on.

When our counties don’t exist anymore and we are just regions of Europe how will we vote for our members of parliament.

Surely we won’t have to depend on the four representatives of each of the eight regions to fight for us in the European Parliament, although it could work out cheaper than paying our puppet parliament.
