SIR – The photograph of the Midland Red employees in the December 3 issue brought back some golden memories for me.
I worked for the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company as a driver from 1963 to 1969 and nearly all those on the photograph were still employed by the company at that time.
The company was very strict about running on time and you were expected to wear your headgear when entering Birmingham. The hourly rate at that time was five shillings per hour (25p) and if you were accident-free for three months you earned a 30 shillings bonus.
I still have my six-year driving award hanging on the wall.
At about that time we held about six Saturday strikes which put us on very bad terms with the general public (I was very much against such action) which led to my leaving the company.
