SIR – It is time to speak out against the Government’s steady erosion of civil liberties and constant battering of our democracy.

The arrest of the Tory MP Damien Green for doing his job is horrifying.

This seems to be a situation of the Government using the police to protect itself from embarrassment.

It is something we expect from Robert Mugabe but not in a democracy.

The arrest seems to be characteristic of this Government’s attitude towards our civil liberties.

We have ID cards on the way for the Government to hold yet more information about each individual when a deluge of security experts are saying that this will not make any difference in terms of protecting the public from harm and no difference to preventing terrorism or crime.,
