SIR – Reg Moule’s description of the fork in Saturday, November 22. was inaccurate.
A pitchfork (as he described it) is by definition a fork for pitching, as with a digging for, or a muck spreading fork.
A pitchfork was used for pitching sheaves of corn. where they had been staked in stools after binding, on to the farm wagon.
The fork in the picture had four lines, a pitchfork has two.
JOHN EVANS,
Kempsey.
