SIR – Mr Margretts (November 27) says that the present economic crisis shows we should have joined the euro – what a totally wrong claim.

By staying out we are able to take action that is correct for us.

We have lowered our bank rate and we have given aid to/taken into public ownership banks which have failed. We did this without having to seek permission of anyone else.

Our exchange rate has moved down against the euro and the dollar which will help us enormously to grow exports and by making euro goods more expensive means that we will have to switch to buying equivalent British goods again to the advantage of our manufacturers.

MARK STARR,

Leigh Sinton.
